No matter HOW your body changes, it will never be No matter HOW your body changes, it will never be what it used to be. 🙌 if you agree!

I can't believe the number of times I had looked at previous photos of myself, and remember how in each one, I thought at that time, I was "too fat".... and best believe, I looked different in every photo.

What does that tell you?

It was never about my body. I only started seeing things differently AFTER I made my peace with my size, accepted my body, and treated it with respect and kindness regardless.

.
. So instead of comparing your body today to what it was before, OR what you hope it would be in the future...

And waiting to start LIVING, being present, finding love, wearing comfortable clothes, eating your favourite foods, and allowing yourself to be happy...

Know that your body size doesn't do that for you. You do.

My friend, you are magical. Don't let that go in pursuit of an idealized body size or image!

Okay, can we PLEASE stop talking about the "QUARA Okay, can we PLEASE stop talking about the "QUARANTINE 15"!? 🙌 below if you agree

Our bodies change along as we adapt to the current situation of the world right now, and THAT'S OKAY.

As we move close towards each of us getting a vaccine (or whatever 2021 has in store for us), I want everyone to rethink the "losing weight to get ready to go out again" mindset.

It's normal for our bodies to change through these times. Not just because we are moving less and eating more or differently, but also, and more importantly, our nervous system is trying to keep us alive. The stress we're under means our body is constantly trying to find safety, when we're feeling unsettled and unsafe in this world.

Our mental health is already SO compromised, and our basic needs based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs are still compromised (like safety, connections & belonging).

So instead of focusing on manipulating your body, focus on rebuilding your mental health and then think of how you can honor your physical needs in ways that are accessible for you right now.

Take the time to tackle what these feelings are that are causing you stress, and find a variety or new ways to deal with these feelings.

We may not always understand why our bodies are the way they are, but we CAN understand and accept that there are causes that led our bodies to where they currently are.

And if all else is not accessible for you right now, start with compassion. That never fails to support us.

I was told by a director for a job I was longing f I was told by a director for a job I was longing for that "my experience is more valuable than my ideas."

I carried that with me for YEARS - I kept thinking how that applied in my life.

In a way, it also applies to our eating and exercise routines as well.

Just because you think you "SHOULD" eat more veggies or exercise daily, doesn't mean you'll be successful at it by making it a "goal" and diving headfirst.

When you want to make something work, you've got to reflect on what DID and DIDN'T work before.

➡️ Did you stop eating veggies because they're boring? Make them more tasty and exciting for you.

➡️ Did you stop exercising because you're too exhausted at the time you've set to go? Change the time, frequency or the type of exercise.

➡️ Or with whatever change, you're forcing yourself and life got in the way? This means you're going too far too fast and your goal is likely not realistic at this time in your life.

Healthy behaviors are not an ALL or NOTHING ... they're all encompassing... they allow you to have days where you just need to stay home and order in, cook homemade meals from scratch and include a variety of foods for gentle nutrition, AND also allow you to listen to your cravings and eat for joy.

Healthy behaviors are things you do consistently, not when everything is perfect (because it never is), but rather something you do alongside all the imperfections of life.

So when your EXPERIENCE becomes more "evidenced" by little successes, rather than "all the failures".... you'll start moving way from the all-or-nothing mentality, and start embracing the new experiments you do to find joy in these health-promoting behaviours.

Yesterday I posted about what HAES IS... but what Yesterday I posted about what HAES IS... but what about what it IS NOT?
Did you ever hear of these statements or think they are true?

Because society and social media have cultivated this fatphobic culture, it can be shocking to hear about Health at Every Size (HAES) with so much literature on the risks of obesity and weight gain. This movement is meant to shift the movement towards more weight-inclusivity and support for all body sizes to be adopt healthy behaviors, and away from the extensive damage that focusing soley on weight and sizes has done to us, mentally and physically. ⬇️HERE'S THREE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW⬇️ 1️⃣ It is also a movement of social justice, bringing attention to how "the pursuit of health" in its traditional sense is not actually accessible for many BIPOC folks nor does it take into consideration the systemic limitations imposed on those who don't fit the "mold". What we don't always recognize is that scientific evidence has to be based on a sample of people and it's not generalizable to those who are not represented. Do you think BIPOC folks are represented enough?
... no they're not. 2️⃣ Even if you were to explore the research around BMI, you will know that it was only based on Caucasian men... yet it gets generalized to everyone. Do you think EVERYBODY is represented by this standard? .... no they're not. 3️⃣ The "ideal standards" of beauty and body size have changed throughout the centuries, and the world we grew up in has definitely manipulated us into valuing thinner bodies. It's also tricked us into thinking that attaining those standards is an ACHIEVEMENT that places the responsibility on our shoulders, rather than on genes, environmental factors, and other things beyond our control. So is our society's standards on the "ideal" body and thinness something that ALL bodies need to "fit in"? Abso-friggen-lutely No. ➡️ Which of these is surprising to you? Or unfortunately, not surprising? Let me know below! ~~~~

If you're curious to learn more about HAES, DM me! Looking forward to chatting y'all
Did you think the Health At Every Size (HAES) move Did you think the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement meant HEALTHY at every size?

That's one of the biggest misconceptions about being weight-inclusive.

A client of mine had struggled with yo-yo dieting, bingeing and weight fluctuations for OVER 40 years.

Every health professional she saw before me kept telling her to eat less and exercise more. She was judged for her size without getting some tests or follow-ups on specific conditions. She was called a liar about her intake & exercise because her weight didn't change much.

This weight bias is WHY the HAES movement is so important and is so needed.

Speaking DOWN to someone who's in a bigger body, calling them a liar, judging them for eating... what a life.

So when we worked together, I approached this client just like anyone else.

- I lead a no-judgment zone
- I believe all bodies deserve respect and to be treated with dignity
- I don't change how I provide counseling or coaching based on someone's size
- I assess their nutrition needs to include joy, pleasure, satisfaction & satiety
- I honour their wants, needs and limitations. If someone doesn't WANT TO eat veggies or fruit... who am I to say otherwise? We may explore why or why not, try new ways of eating, and/or use supplements.

This is a glimpse of what my role as a #haesdietitian comes into play in our sessions.

Emotional eating is usually referred to as somethi Emotional eating is usually referred to as something that we need to “fix”, but do we need to stop and is it really that bad? (Spoiler alert: it isn’t!) ➡️➡️➡️Swipe to find out! ➡️➡️➡️

You know when you have a bad day and you reach for ice cream because you know it will make you feel better. Or other times, you order your favourite pizza AND take a bath. And other times, you just need a hug, good cry, venting sesh, or restful sleep.

They're all ways that we use to cope with our emotions. Sometimes we cope using food, and we name it as 'emotional eating'.

If you're interested in improving your relationship with food, a more intuitive and mindful approach might be for you. Let me ask you this - what would make today AWESOM Let me ask you this - what would make today AWESOME for you?

I just listened to a podcast on "awesomology" which was all about gratitude...

With all the chaos and uncertainty of our life nowadays, it can be easy to forget about all of the little #blessings we have in our lives. A great way to take a break from all the hustle and bustle is to exercise gratitude, which can have a very powerful impact on our lives.

There are a lot of benefits to practicing gratitude that might surprise you.

By bringing attention to the pleasant aspects of our lives – even for just a few minutes a day – we can reflect on our outlook, reorient ourselves, and become more resilient.

While expressing gratitude might not eliminate the struggles you're facing, it can help you process things better and get through these difficult times. It’s okay to acknowledge & honour what you’re going through & feel your feelings, AND do what you need to do to cope & move forward.
